Question:

Do you have to have a lawyer to get a divorce?

State:
Missouri

Answer:

No, you don’t absolutely have to have a lawyer in order to get divorced…but it helps. Most states will allow you to complete and file your own divorce papers, but it can be a considerable task in cases of difficult or contested divorces. If you don’t have any children or a large estate to divide and you can reach some sort of mutual agreement with your spouse – it is likely you could complete your own divorce in most cases, although their are some jurisdictions that make even the simplest cases extremely difficult to complete by yourself. Check with your state’s government website or the Clerk of the Court in the county where you live to see what you will need. – The Divorce.com Team
