If I ask for a divorce will I have to make mortgage payments? Michigan

Question:

If I ask for a divorce will I still have to make payments on the mortage untill the house is sold or can I walk away from it all? (MI)

State:
Michigan

Answer:

Filing for a divorce does not automatically remove an obligation to pay your mortgage even if the house is currently for sale. Someone has to make the payments, and if you don’t the bank will. That is, after they have foreclosed on the home and you lose whatever equity you might have had in it it. Try to hang in there and make the payments until the divorce is finalized. – The Divorce.com Team Wendy Jaffe and Divorce.com can only provide general information about divorce. DO NOT RELY ON MS.
