Question:

I left my husband and moved out of our house. We bought it approx. 13yrs ago. He seems to think it is now his only. Along with our car and other belongings. We’ve been married for 16yrs. I told him half of everything also belongs to me. Is he right? Did I give up my ownership of my previous life because I left him? (PA)

State:
Pennsylvania

Answer:

Pennsylvania is an Equitable Distribution state, and marital property like your house and other stuff will be divided in an equitable fashion according to what is fair, not necessarily equal. Not all marital property is divided 50-50 in an equitable distribution state. It sounds like you need to consult a good divorce attorney to insure your rights are represented in this instance. – The Divorce.com Team Wendy Jaffe and Divorce.com can only provide general information about divorce.
